Job Description

The Controllership Manager is responsible for various Accounting processes, financial reporting and control implementation and/or monitoring that are found in a typical financial institution accounting department. This role is responsible for ensuring all responsibilities of the area are performed as expected to meet the needs of the business and compliant with GAAP and Bread Financial accounting policies, ensures that General Ledger Account Reconciliations completed by others are done timely and accurately with appropriate supporting documentation, and conducts and oversees various analysis and reports that are prepared for senior management and other customers within the business.

Job Summary

Essential Job Functions:

  • Leadership: Leads, develops and coaches a team of accounting professionals - hiring, teaching, coaching, goal setting. Ability to completing/conducting performance evaluations by providing continuous feedback. Recognizing/celebrating accomplishments of team members. Lead both direct reports and other associates to accomplish company initiatives.

  • Accounting Principles: Validate company financial statements including income statement and balance sheet are correct each month for month end close. Review monthly Balance Sheet Account Reconciliations for schedule accuracy and supporting documentation validation. Verify that GAAP and Bread Financial Accounting Policies are being followed. Ensure proper accounting controls (SOX control environment) are in place and functioning as designed. Review processes to find efficiencies as a result of redundancy or unnecessary tasks being performed. Ensure timely and accurate responses are provided to internal/external customers. Utilize effective time management skills to balance various tasks. Apply knowledge of Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams to execute daily work.

  • Relationship Management: Effectively work with non-Accounting departments in meeting the needs of external clients and internal customers. Serve as a subject matter expert on Accounting processes within the areas overseen. Communicate effectively with higher level management within the Accounting department as well as auditors.

  • Financial Analysis: Lead team to operate in an often-ambiguous environment which will call for investigation/discovery by asking probing questions to discover the root cause of issues. Additionally, being able to create, vet, propose, provide oversite, and drive solutions to completion will be essential. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to assist staff in complex and challenging items. Responsible for detailed understanding the “why” behind complex accounting topics and business operations. Provides thorough analysis on complex topics to include challenges, cause/effect and final resolution. Utilizes depth of business and technical knowledge and experience to anticipate required changes to current and future processes. Understands complexities between business operations in order to provide financial impact to management. Willingness to think outside of the box in terms of problem solving.

  • Project Management: Lead process improvements and initiatives. Project manage initiatives from gathering requirements, following up with key resources, documenting project decisions and implementing the initiative. Driving improvements to policies, procedures, and processes that improve consistency, accuracy and timeliness as well as strengthen internal controls. Establishes clear controls & monitoring as a result of the issues management process, including governance, self-assessments, testing, reporting, communication and training. Self-starter with ability to work independently and multitask to meet deadlines. Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy by analyzing data and drawing conclusions based upon the data. Establish and meet critical deadlines while prioritizing multiple activities and complex projects simultaneously.

Working Conditions/ Physical Requirements
  • This position is hybrid with an onsite schedule of 4 - 5 days per month.
  • In-office requirements are subject to change based on business needs. This position is currently available to candidates that reside within 60 miles of Columbus, OH.
  • Normal office environment, some travel may be required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, or Business related
  • Five or more years work experience in Accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, internal controls, analysis and reporting.
Preferred Experience:
  • Certification – Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, professional certification relevant to accounting, auditing, financial, or risk management fields
  • Seven or more years work experience
  • One year of direct personnel supervision. Accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, internal controls, analysis and reporting. Basic understanding and research of technical accounting and US GAAP.
  • Systems experience: Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams, PeopleSoft, Blackline

Typical Starting Range:
$97,900.00 - $177,400.00

Full Salary Range for position:
California: $112,600.00 - $221,800.00
Colorado: $97,900.00 - $186,300.00
New York: $107,700.00 - $221,800.00
Washington: $102,800.00 - $204,000.00

The actual base pay within this range may be dependent upon many factors, which may include, but are not limited to, work location, education, experience, and skills.

Associates have discretion in managing their time away from work through the Flexible Time Off (FTO) program and may need to notify and receive approval from their manager prior to taking the time off. Associates (except those located in Illinois) receive 80 hours of Paid Sick and Safe Time (“PSST”) upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois associates receive 40 hours of Illinois PSST upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year and 40 hours of Illinois Paid Leave upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois Paid Leave must be used before associates in Illinois will be approved to take FTO.

Hired associates will be able to elect the purchase company stock during offering periods in June and December. You will be eligible for an annual incentive bonus based on individual and company performance.
